new project (with a bonus speedy marking tip)

I started ironing the fabrics the very day I finished the last quilt.

Everyone asks, "Who is this one for?"
Which, I suppose is a very valid question ;-)
but I don't know the answer yet.

Sometimes quilts just need to be made.
This one jumped in my head and obnoxiously stole all of the attention from all of the other quilts percolating there,
so I figured it was best to just get on with it.
Oh, how I suffer ;-)

This quilt will be made entirely of half-square triangles; 16 per block.
I am using this method, with 7 inch squares,
which requires that diagonal lines be marked from corner to corner, so 2 lines each, on every square.

I sat down yesterday with a ruler and pencil to mark my fabric for sewing,
and quickly realized
this was going to take a dang long time!
I had 120 'white' fabrics to mark.

I am just tickled with what I came up with.
It was genius
if I do say so myself!

Instead of individually marking all. those. squares.
I stacked up 6-8, carefully matching up the corners
- with 1 marked fabric on top -

and ran them through my sewing machine without thread (with a size 14 needle)
(which made a nice little 'perforated' line where it was needle-pierced)

and was able,
in one hour's time,
to mark all 120 pieces!

And now, I can get on with the sewing...

  1. Now that's a new and ingenious idea! Some quilt do indeed just need to be made. Looking forward to watching this progress too. I made a red and white HST quilt as a gift over three years ago and loved it so much I immediately made another the same to keep!

  6. what a cool idea! I am a fan of starting quilts without a specific person in mind, because it always happens that while working on it a charity needs arises or someone falls in love with what I am making and it ends up theirs.

  8. That is pretty dang smart!!! How long did the perforation stay visible? And have you done this since then and it worked again? Thanks for the idea!
